Interesting thought on the pursuit being the meaning -could be an issue if the person pursuing takes joy in merely the pursuit and not the possibility of finding meaning. The endless road has got to make one weary at some point.

And for sure I encourage the experimentation - that is what I appreciate most about Cage. He had balls to do what he did especially before it was considered 'cool'. I just have issues with the belief that randomness is the highest form of art. Beethoven shouts the obvious truth on that matter...

Soundstorming -great word!

@Tanja you need to hear or listen to some... im not making a case for Cage, im just sayin' ;]]
4*33 has more to do w/ 'what you are'than w/ 'what you can hear' -i hope that generates some curiosity.

@keith "...we would simply wither into a pile of void that no amount of psychotherapy or Prozac could resurrect."
how about the 'meaning' of life can be for one, the pursuit of its meaning? maybe we dont need a meaning in an articulate form, and thats what makes us a miracle: the search! now back to the sound.
very few of us enjoy random sounds, but i need to say that every now and then, the randomness builds itself up in such a way that perplexes our ears. so my point would be, let the man experiment and call it music, because out of it might rise some unexpected sweet tunes. call it if you like soundstorming ;]
ps thanks for you good words
pps this is my second language, pardon my inner-translations :]

Best thing I've read all week.

"I believe that although in one sense we are part of nature, we are also in greater sense, outside it, and it is the fact that we bring form, purpose and meaning to that which is devoid of such elements that express a beauty that transcends and indeed elevates that which occurs ‘naturally’."

Absolutely. What if the apogee of nature and the universe is Reason? And we are fortunate to be the ones wondering at it all. Trees, wind, and rain possess timeless beauty but the planet would be worth a fraction without its Great Pyramid of Giza, Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, and its Abbey Road.

Brilliant mind, my friend.

I completely agree with you: just 'making sound' does not do it for me. I have to have a collection of sounds that are actually pleasant to the human ear. I have never heard about this Cage guy up until I read your article but from what you have wrote, I don't think I like this guy.
